That’s it for me. I’m done. I would like to thank TC for all of his trust and support the past few years. I would also like to give a huge thanks to Sandi and Bill for their support as well. Nice to know that I had at least a couple of real friends around when things got tough. But I’ve stuck it out all alone for as long as I can handle it. So, since nobody gives a rats ass any more, I’m done posting on TTF. I will however continue to post the monthly NFZ post, and will gladly post any contributions anyone would like to send in (like that’s gonna happen……), but as far as any reviews, or contests, or anything done on my behalf, that’s it. I’m done. No more.

CDC: Nearly 1 out of 25 food borne illness outbreaks caused by tainted dips

Better put down that tortilla chip.

Contaminated salsa or guacamole were the culprits in nearly 1 out of every 25 foodborne illness outbreaks linked to food in restaurants between 1998 and 2008, according to new research released today by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That’s more than double the rate during the previous decade, CDC officials said.

“Fresh salsa and guacamole, especially those served in retail food establishments, may be important vehicles of foodborne infection,” said Magdalena Kendall, a researcher at Tennessee’s Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education who collaborated on the study.

An inmate in a state prison was hospitalized and needed emergency surgery to remove a hot-sauce bottle he apparently had used as a sex device.

Taxpayers will end up paying the prisoner’s medical bills, expected to run into the thousands of dollars.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction won’t release the name of the inmate, citing federal regulations regarding the privacy of medical records.

However, a report by the State Highway Patrol, which initially investigated the incident as a rape case, said an inmate at the Noble Correctional Facility in Caldwell was taken to Marietta General Hospital on Sunday evening after saying he had been sexually assaulted in the shower by another prisoner.

The injured inmate later acknowledged that he had not been assaulted, but on his own had inserted the hot-sauce bottle anally, sources said.

“At this point, we don’t believe there was a perpetrator involved in the incident,” said prisons spokeswoman Julie Walburn.

However, sources said, surgery was required to remove the bottle. The inmate was hospitalized and was treated in the intensive-care unit.

Walburn said the state won’t know the total cost until all medical bills are submitted.

State officials frequently point out that the state is required by law to provide medical care for prisoners – even those who harm themselves. The state is self-insured and pays its own bills.

The new Defcon Newsletter is out …….

Well, it’s been quite a while since our last email to all of you. I figured it was a good time to bring everyone up to date as to what is going on within Defcon Sauces. So, grab a beer, kick back and enjoy the ride, it’s a good one.

Well, as many of you know, The DM-MKII (Deathmatch Mark II), our evil competition wing sauce, is forever sold out. Trust me, we are in the process of creating its successor. Be careful what you wish for (insert evil chuckle). As some of you know, we are also working on a few different projects right now, with products quite off our regular path. I think it’s time to mix things up a little bit. In the next month or so, we should have a couple new goodies for you all to enjoy. It’ll be worth the wait. It’s been a while since we’ve come out with a new product (almost 2 years), but that’s just the way we like it. We here at the Genetic Alchemy Labs of Defcon Sauces prefer to test ideas for an extended amount of time, instead of throwing something out there that we don’t feel 100% about. This course of action has always for us in the past, so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Many are also inquiring about our infamous elixir, the Defcon ZERO. Well, I must say, after our very cool segment on the Travel Channel last year, the stuff has gained in popularity at an exponential rate. We are hoping to have another batch of the stuff ready by the end of the summer, or sooner, if possible. It takes about 8 months to make the stuff, and you can’t rush perfection. We are toying around with another version of ZERO as well. We’re in the final stages of perfecting it, so it just might be available at the same time the regular ZERO is ready, keep your fingers crossed. Many have also inquired if we will be doing another collectible bottle this year (The Batch #6). Well, sorry to say, we will NOT be doing a collector bottle this year. The reasoning behind this is quite simple. I have empathy for those whose disposable income isn’t what it used to be, and many people have had to tighten their belt financially as of late, so to release an somewhat expensive collector item, many wouldn’t be able to afford. So, in my mind, it just wouldn’t be the right thing to do. So we’ll just wait a little while. Trust me, good things come to those who wait. If you are receiving this e-mail, you need not worry, as you are on the mailing list and will be notified a couple of days before the next regular ZERO release. When notified, I would suggest ordering it quickly when it becomes available, as the evil little stuff tends to sell out quickly.

We’re also toying around with the idea of expanding the Defcon line of clothing. We’ve created an improved logo for this line of clothing, and we’re thinking of calling it “Acolyte Actionwear”. It’ll include stuff like headwraps, possibly leather vests, etc. It’ll be a while until this happens, but what we’ve come up with so far is very cool!

We have been quite busy with events as well. We’ve throttled back the number of Defcon Days as of late, in order to focus on catering parties, which has been a really cool success. People like the idea of having their own ‘Wingman’ at the party, and people have really taken to the whole concept. We will continue to do the Defcon Days at various drinking establishments, so keep an eye out, you never quite know where we will turn up. Our next Defcon Day event will take place at Duff’s in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on August 14th. It’ll be our 4th year doing this gig, and trust me when I say it’s THE most interesting event we do all year! Duff’s is a hardcore thrash metal bar (www.duffsbrooklyn.com) , and we’ll be serving up the masses from 9pm to 3:30am (Yes, all night), and as the saying goes, ‘The freaks come out at night!’. We will also be doing a number of public events toward NFL football season, as always.

We had a very cool ‘Tailgate Party’ at Peppers in Rehoboth Beach (www.peppers.com) back in May, in which a bunch of newer companies set up in the parking lot in front of Peppers and sampled their wares to a good number of public attendees. We got very good local press before and after, and Chip Hearn is looking forward to doing it again next year. I was happy to have had a large hand in setting up the gig, and look forward to seeing a lot more vendors and people show up next year. As far as I know, this was a ‘first of its kind’ event on the east coast, so hey, you gotta start somewhere, and we have definitely planted the seed of interest.

As for larger venue shows, Jungle Jim’s Weekend of Fire (www.junglejims.com) is coming up at the end of July (July 31-August 1) and is another of our favorite venues, as we unleash our signature event, The National Championship Defcon Wing-Eating Deathmatch! It’s truly a sight to behold, as the masses are shown there does exist another level of being, and man is it painful! It’s a great show if you are in the area and would like to meet up with over 70 different manufacturers of some of the best spicy foods and creations known to man. We just might have a few of the new products available, if things go according to plan, and we’ll once again have the Defcon Pain Center open to the public, so feel free to stop in and allow me to personally show you what exquisite painful bliss actually feels like.

After the Jungle Jims event, we’ll have a bit of a hiatus, concentrating on football season, and a few local gigs, but in January, we hit up probably the biggest event of next year, at a brand new location. Zest Fest has changed their location from the Will Rogers Institute to the BRAND new Irving Convention Center in Irving, TX from Friday, January 28-Sunday, January 30. The new location is absolutely awesome, and Zest Fest will be the inaugural event for the convention center itself. Combine that with the fact that it’s Media Week before the Superbowl taking place in Dallas the following weekend, and you have a perfect recipe for abject mayhem, just the way we like it! This show has always been a blast, and I have a good feeling this one will be one for the record books!

Other than events, the Defcon Crew has been burning the midnight oil, as usual, in our never-ending quest to assimilate the global population through ingestion of our culinary masterpieces. We have been pretty successful this year in expanding our sphere of influence to a few new countries like Ireland, Germany and Iceland, and are looking forward to assimilating even more countries this year.

It’s funny, 6 years ago, almost to the day, I was pounding the pavement, hawking a backpack full of sauces to anyone that would try them. It’s an amazing feeling to have gotten as far as we have. We don’t consider ourselves as a main player in this industry, but the notoriety, the awesome people we have met in the industry and the amount of good feedback we’ve received over the years has fueled the Defcon engine, and allowed us to work even harder at an idea that sprung up so many years ago out of the blue, and has shown us proof positive that hard work and passion do pay off. We absolutely love all the emails we get from customers and people curious about what we are all about (a thing WE’RE still trying to figure out, lol), and many have come to me on various websites and asked about the particulars in starting up their own business. I have and will continue to be happy to answer those questions as best I can, and have explained some of the landmines they will want to avoid, ones that I stepped on when we first started. It’s a feel-good thing to me to be able to help some else follow their dream. I don’t consider myself as any kind of guru for the industry, but I can certainly feed off of my personal experiences, and explain the outcomes I have been a part of. I am also looking forward to speaking engagements at local colleges and universities to discuss various aspects of entrepreneurship, and the inherent plusses and minuses that go along with it.

In closing, myself and the Uber-Wife Unit, Maggie, truly thank all of you for your continued support of our strangely redeeming venture, which is, day by day, becoming a dream come true. Words themselves cannot describe the overwhelming positive feeling we have right now. We look forward to seeing many of you at the various events we will be doing, and don’t forget to stop by and say hi.

Break out the grills, the PBR, and the fireworks, it’s time to celebrate!

Taste The Fear would like to wish everyone a safe and happy 4th of July!

The big fireworks show here was last night, since the fourth falls on a Sunday this year. The pic at the top of this post is a composite of some of the snapshots that I made of the display. Also, I managed to borrow a second camera and was able to shoot video of the display. Watch it below and see if you can pick out the shots from the pic above.

So, what does everyone have planned? The fireworks show was pretty much it for me. I’ll probably grill a couple of burgers tonight, but other than that it’ll be a pretty laid back day. No classes next week, so I’ll have time to finish up a couple of reviews that I’ve been working on and get those posted, so keep your eyes peeled for those.

Properly Displaying The Flag

There is a right way and a wrong way to display the flag. The American flag should be held in the highest of regards. It represents our nation and the many people who gave their lives for our country. Please display it properly this Flag Day, and every day:

* The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset.
* In the morning, raise the flag briskly. At sunset, lower it slowly. Always, raise and lower it ceremoniously.
* The flag should not be flown at night without a light on it.
* The flag should not be flown in the rain or inclement weather.
* After a tragedy or death, the flag is flown at half staff for 30 days. It’s called “half staff” on land ,and “half mast” on a ship.
* When flown vertically on a pole, the stars and blue field , or “union”, is at the top and at the end of the pole (away from your house).
* The American flag is always flown at the top of the pole. Your state flag and other flags fly below it.
* The union is always on top. When displayed in print, the stars and blue field are always on the left.
* Never let your flag touch the ground, never…period.
* Fold your flag when storing. Don’t just stuff it in a drawer or box.
* When your flag is old and has seen better days, it is time to retire it. Old flags should be burned or buried. Please do not throw it in the trash. There’s a very special ceremony for retiring the flag by burning it. Your local Boy Scout group knows the proper ceremony and performs it on a regular basis. If you have an old flag, give it to them for disposal and attend the ceremony.

This is a really great product that’s simple in design and function. I bought the ceramic version (Santa Barbara Stack) and am really pleased with them. Here’s a description from the company:

The CaliBowl™, from SimpleWave, is simplicity defined-a direct, simple and easy solution to an annoying problem. For salsa and dips, you can’t beat the CaliBowl™. Funny thing though, the main reason I bought the CaliBowl™ wasn’t for myself, but for my cat. He’s really bad about pushing his food out of his bowl as he eats. I’ve tried different size and shape bowls and no matter what, he still manages to push at least half of his food out on the floor. And no, I’m not eating from the cat’s bowl. I got a set of two, one for him, and one for me. The 1.5 cup size is just right as a general purpose soup or cereal bowl, but it’s a little large to use for single serving dips. So I’ll be ordering more bowls soon. I’m looking at the Del Mar Stack for my personal dipping pleasure, and I may get a set of The Big Sur mixing bowls for kitchen duties.

My pet peeve is yellow mustard. I can certain dig other varieties like spicy brown, dijon, honey, stone ground, etc. So now here I am writing a review for a mustard hot sauce that is all yellow in taste. The only difference is the spicy heat that hits you as soon as you taste it. Once that is gone, the yellowness remains.

I went with a hot dog first. I probably should’ve went with some sauerkraut too.

I had made some mashed potatoes and figured I would experiment on these.

I bought myself an onion roll and some bologna which is a kosher style sammich that I grew up with.

Last but certainly least was my experiment with pastrami. It just didn’t work folks. Not one bit, and not even worth showing you a pic of that.

I am sorry C.M.P., just not my type of product.

Anyone ever had hot wings with chunks of goodies in the sauce? Recently, while retuning home from an out of town hunting trip ( Turkey season ), I decided to stop off for a bite to eat on the outskirts of Columbia, SC. I found a little place called Sammi’s Deli that had the typical deli fare such as hot and cold subs, salads, burgers, special sandwiches, gyros, etc. Among all of the items on their extensive menu, one thing really caught my eye, HOT WINGS! 28 flavors of wings actually. Way more wings than I expected to see in a deli. So I ordered up a Roast Beef sub and an order of “Inferno” wings (their hottest).

When I ordered up the wings, the main thing on my mind was the heat level. Of course they said that they were extremely hot, but there was no waiver, or any warnings of death, so I figured it wouldn’t be too bad as is usually the case. But When I opened the container to grab that first wing, I had a nice little surprise before even taking a bite. There were chunks on my wings! That’s right, bits and pieces of peppers and onions that were chopped up and added to the sauce. Nice! This was the first time that I’ve had hot wings prepared this way. Thinking back on it, I had heard the cook talking with one of the customers about using crushed pineapple in the sauce for the Hawaiian BBQ to add a little texture. It never occurred to me that he would do something similar with the “hot” wings. As simple as it was, it really is what made these wings so good.

While this may not be some huge blockbuster story, I just wanted to share it with you guys. I would love to hear if anyone has had wings made this way before, maybe it’s common in certain areas? If not, then give it shot next time you cook up a batch of wings.

GAUHATI, India – The Indian military has a new weapon against terrorism: the world’s hottest chili.

After conducting tests, the military has decided to use the thumb-sized “bhut jolokia,” or “ghost chili,” to make tear gas-like hand grenades to immobilize suspects, defense officials said Tuesday.

The bhut jolokia was accepted by Guinness World Records in 2007 as the world’s spiciest chili. It is grown and eaten in India’s northeast for its taste, as a cure for stomach troubles and a way to fight the crippling summer heat.

It has more than 1,000,000 Scoville units, the scientific measurement of a chili’s spiciness. Classic Tabasco sauce ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units, while jalapeno peppers measure anywhere from 2,500 to 8,000.

“The chili grenade has been found fit for use after trials in Indian defense laboratories, a fact confirmed by scientists at the Defense Research and Development Organization,” Col. R. Kalia, a defense spokesman in the northeastern state of Assam, told The Associated Press.

“This is definitely going to be an effective nontoxic weapon because its pungent smell can choke terrorists and force them out of their hide-outs,” R. B. Srivastava, the director of the Life Sciences Department at the New Delhi headquarters of the DRDO said.

Srivastava, who led a defense research laboratory in Assam, said trials are also on to produce bhut jolokia-based aerosol sprays to be used by women against attackers and for the police to control and disperse mobs.
