Jamaican Me Hungry Mon! – Sunrite Crushed Red Pepper Sauce

My boss just got home from Jamaica and guess what he brought back for me? Of course he brought me hot sauce..3 different bottles!
I debated on opening any of them..but my boss said he made some connection with this guy who said he can ship more, so we decided to open one of them tonight. We had pizza and decided to open the only one that didn’t say Scotch Bonnet on it. Sunrite True Jamaican Crushed Red Pepper. It was cool that the label was 2 sided, one in English and the other in Jamaican(?).

I was really impressed by the look and bright color of this sauce. It almost glows. It looked really neat when I poured it on my plate, like it separated or was in something thick..corn syrup shiny..but it’s not.. so I guess that’s from the starch.

As far as the taste goes, it tastes like watered down peppers. I can’t place the pepper source though, it doesn’t have a distinct flavor like a hab or bonnet does. No salty taste, but it has heat, not so much at first. It’s one of those the more you eat the hotter it gets. I”d really like to know the crushed peppers that they use. I’m really excited that I had the chance to try this sauce that I would have never seen unless I went to Jamaica!

my inlaws church went to jamaica and brought them back a bottle of jerk sauce that was the same brand as the bottle on the left. they gave it to me but i dont really care for jerk sauces all that much so it went on the collecters shelf.
I have a couple of Baronhall Farms tasters that are really good. Jamaican Hot Curry and Jamaican Hell Hot. The curry one is my fav of the two.
I have some Walkerswood bottles among the older stuff in my collection. Way too old to eat though. There may be a Sunrite in there as well, but I haven’t been able to locate it yet. Lots of stuff from other countries though. It’s really cool seeing labels in other languages that I can’t read. TONS of product out there from outside the US, that’s for sure. Hot sauce is definitely a larger more diverse market around the world than just the stuff that we see here in the states.
Thanks for sharing Sandi! Looking forward to when you open the other two!
If that jerk sauce is as good as the curry, it should be a really tasty sauce Justin. I’ll have to look for that one and give it a try. My favorite jerk sauce so far is Flaming Joe’s. Not Jamaican, but man is it good.
Hey, I just looked, one of my old Walkerswood bottles is a jerk sauce, and it’s got a short bus on the label!

I had understood that Walkerswood (same folks as Busha Browns) had gone out of business. It was one of the sauce makers I visited while on assignment down there in ’97. Nice folks!
I have some old Busha Brown stuff too. Matter of fact, I’ve eaten some of the Busha Brown sauce, it’s good stuff. So both are now gone Jim?
So maybe I should keep the Walkerswood for the cabinet instead of opening it?
I think you should taste it before making your final decision.
I’ll have to check and see if my boss can get me another bottle..then I’ll make the final decision..
