Buddah’s North Market Festival Update
By DK | February 22, 2009 |
Here’s the low down on the North Market Fiery Foods Festival from TTF’s roving reporter Buddah. Sounds like a great time was had by all and that it was once again a very sucessful event. Thanks Buddah for keeping us all posted! – DK
Friday 2/20/09:
I tried CaJohn’s new hot sauce called Mongoose. It is F’n hot. The burn is immediate, builds for a few minutes, maintains for a bit longer, then lingers on for about 20 minutes. The show poster looks cooler in person the way they have it with shredding wornout look. He also has it on a bottle which is the final version of the Jolokia Madness. The chili shoppe looks good and their hot sauce space is so much bigger.
It was great to see John and Sue again and hear about the goings on. I hung with ChileWilly(Mark) when I first got here. I watched him prep some jolokia seasoned chili for the show. Also saw Chef Steve and the Urban Chef. Joe and Linda have been great hosts so far, and made me a Mojito which I think I will term Joejito since he made it..
There is my first day wrap-up, nighty nite!
Intermission:
I will do more of a report a little later before bed, but I love this quote whilst at dinner. Bret brought up that TTF should do a Battle of the Bottles Bhuty version. We started to laugh at the idea of Battle of the Bhuty. Sue Hard then says, “No! Bret’s Bhuty tastes much better than my bhuty!
Saturday 2/21/09:
the show went very fast today. Hudd’s sauce and my 2 entries had to bow to Donavan’s wing sauce winner. Another show, and another. Congrats again Donavan, it tasted really good. I also failed to place in the chili cookoff. People who tasted my chili gave me big complaints, so I knew it was good at least.
A 3rd loss was during Jeopardy as Passcow showed a Rainman-like pepper knowledge and destroyed Ethan, Hudd and I. It wasn’t even close. I did get all the foo-foo questions right.
Then there was the wing competitions. I decided to walk around sampling some stuff in the market place during the amateur event. The other store owners had spicy things for the show. There was spicy popcorn, ice cream, espresso, hot chocolate, brownies, foccacia bread and other foods throughout the marketplace. The ice cream was real good, with some odd flavors including Maker’s Mark.
I hungout with Cowboy George then hooked up with Passcow and a few others to try CaJohn’s 10 sauce lineup challenge. Chipotle, Oaxacan, Serrano Lime, Infused Bourbon Chipotle, Killer Jalapeno, Ace, Talon, 10, Mongoose. Well I am missing one I think after Killer Jalapeno. That mangoose is a hot one.
The wing challenge was fun to watch as the competitors had to go through some real tough wing sauces, 6 in all. A bunch of people bowed out on the Fatalli puree then the 10 wing sauces. The winner was Dante who works at the North Market cheese shop. He handled the wings with no problem. Not sure who finished 2nd. Not Bret that was sure. Sorry Bret to spoil the surprise.
The show was teetering on just mingling and buying stuff. I got me some goodies to restock my cabinets with and some souvenirs. The Urban Chef had a nice mustard bbq that I liked, and bought some of Chuck Evans salsa too. Hudd hooked me with a bottle of his hot sauce and Passcow gave me the remaining bit of a sauce by Hippyseed. Thanks guys!
We ended up at CaJohn’s favorite Mexican restaurant once the show was wrapped up. Good food, great company and a nice memory. The roads got a bit iced up and it was pretty cold by the time we left. CaJohn and Sue took the bill and treated the lot of us. Too generous. Super people! Thanks for the overwhelming generosity once again. Then we all rode off going our separate ways. Sorry its almost over. Time for bed. Goodnight.
Sunday 2/22/09:
After I had an awesome egg scramble with cheese, onions and peppers with some salsa that Linda whipped up, I packed up and left for last stop at the North Market. Thanks Joe and Linda, you were great hosts, and I really appreciated you letting me stay at you homes with your kids and puppies. Shout out to Ari and Josh! Thanks for letting me sleep in your playroom.
I got to the North Market early and got to speak with Mark aka Chilewilly aka Sport.
Well, CaJohn finally showed and we just chatted for a little while talking about different things. This show will become a 2 day show next year if CaJohn gets his way. There will be a better pace and everything would kept together in the 1 room rather than spread out so much. It was a little out of control at times
For my trip home, I walked around to get me an authentic NY sammich at Barry’s NY Style and CaJohn and I each got an ice cream sammich. Check out www.jenisicecreams.com for the most interested ice cream flavors I have ever sampled including Maker’s Mark. I bought the salty caramel and it was honestly the best ice cream sammich I have ever tasted in my 42 years of life. I even think they ship their ice cream.
Speaking of ice cream, we ran into the maker/creator of Cajun Island who told us they were having a pizza and ice cream convention down the street at the Columbus convention center for Sunday and Ice Cream. As tempted as I was , it was starting to snow and time to go home. I bid goodbye to CaJohn and Sport and hit the ride. It was fun while it lasted. Now back to reality.
