Can You Indentify The Mystery Pepper?

    By DK | July 30, 2009 |

Anyone have an idea what Sandi’s got growing in her pepper patch? Here’s her comment from the NFZ along with pics she submitted in hopes of identifying this particular plant.

Who has a good eye for identifying peppers?
I have a plant in the garden that came from CCN with my order..but it’s not the sub plants or anything that I ordered. The tag said Jolokia..but it’s not…doesn’t match any of the other plants..just very strange..it’s had peppers on it for a week. Just tried one and it’s screaming hot!! But I have no idea what it is.
Would like to send pics of the plant and the peppers off it just to know what it is.

This is the north side of the garden and my mystery plant..all the others around it are Red Savinas and Jolokia’s..can you spot the mystery plant?

The plant is so much bigger than the rest and greener too. Don’t know what to make of the pepper…except it is hot!!

    What’s your thoughts?

The peppers almost look like a funny 7 pot but they are too long….

Do we get a prize if we guess right? Oh wait…

Do you grow your peppers in sand? Does that help, or is that just what your soil looks like up there? It’s probably better than the clay we have down here… :arrrr:

      No Prize-
Yes it’s sand and about all it helps is with drainage and I have yet to ever get anything stuck in it no matter how wet it is.

Hey wait-I KNOW Jim C. will know.

Sure looks like the Jolokias that I grew! It’s not unusual for there to be the occasional ‘sport’- that odd one that turns up every now and then. When I had 5 acres of “RED” Savina(R) in the ground, there were orange ones, purple ones. light green ones and just about everything else imaginable. Didn’t think to save seed from them

I’m sticking with Jolokia on this one. What do the other ones that are supposed to be Nagas look like that you’ve ruled this one out?

      Sandi says:

Thanks Jim! I knew that you would know..it’s just odd..the other 5 plants labeled Nagas are really rough, bumpy skinned. This pepper is really smooth and thick skinned..so it through me for a loop. It sure has the heat of the Naga. Just really confused me! Thanks again! I’ll have to save some seeds.

I finally heard back from the company that I bought the plants from. I sent them pics also. They don’t have a clue..but did say that it’s not a jolokia.

What’s it look like now? Bring one to OF along with a leaf or two. I’ll be GTH if that ain’t a Bhut!

Save the seed, mass produce it, and it’s now the “SandiPepper:

To bad if it’s not a Bhut, because if it is she could call it a “SandiBhut”

Jim I plan to bring a bunch of them to OF! They are ripening now…I think..some red, some orange, some yellow and then green and purple. There has to be 150 peppers on this one plant! It’s so loaded it’s touching the ground. I was going to write you about how to ripen peppers on the plants since it’s been so cold here..I have so many plants with green peppers that need to ripen!
