Chileheads, your prayers are needed
By DK | November 15, 2009 |

I just received this email a few minutes ago.
Message from a Taste The Fear visitor:
I just got the unfortunate new that Mike Cates of HOT SHOTS had a brain aneurysm on Friday. He underwent about 9 1/2 hours of surgery to fix it. That’s about all the information I have at this point. As soon as I get more information I will pass it along. Keep Mikey and Leah in your thoughts and prayers during this rough time for them.
Could you please post something to keep the loyal chiliheads up to date and informed. Thank you.
– Scottie
Hang in there Mike, our thoughts and prayers are on the way.

Wednesday 11/18/09 6:00 p.m. – I just spoke with Mike’s wife Leah. Leah said that Mike is breathing on his own now, his vitals are fine and his color is good. He is still in a medically induced sleep. Mike is in very good hands in the ICU. I will keep everyone informed as any changes in Mike’s condition occur. Leah is very touched and appreciates all of the good wishes that everyone is sending to Mikey.

Oh my! Hope everything turns out okay.
My prayers are with you – good luck!
Prayers..hope for a speedy recovery!
It would certainly be a shame to lose him! My wife refers to him as “cooler man” from his cruising around the shows on the motorized cooler (as pictured). Super nice guy and was always ready to loan tools or whatever to the other vendors to assist with set up.
Thoughts and prayers from the McCanless family. I just lost a buddy two weeks ago to the same circumstance.
I assume we still haven’t received a prognosis.
No word since the email from Scottie. Hopefully no news is good news.
I’ll post updates as soon as I hear anything.
Keep the thoughts and prayers coming everyone.
Mike has always gone out of the way to make sure I always get what I needed. He is one of the good guys, and I wish him my best in his fight. Get well Mike!
Get well my friend
Hoping things are going good for Mike. Like you said news is good news!
Hudd, I just got home and there was an email from Scottie. The update has been added to the post.
Just spoke with Cathy Lutes. Mike will stay in critical condition for at least 3 more weeks. His doctors are concerned about future strokes and are keeping his prognosis as “guarded” whatever that means. Please pray for Mike and Leah.
Hello everyone, Just spoke to Leah and Mike is still not coming out of sleep. All sedation and anesthesia medications have been stopped. Pneumonia is under control. Leah wants everyone to know that she appreciates all phone calls, messages and prayers and everyone’s support. Let’s just keep it all up. We all need the wild & crazy Mikey back soon!! Saturday 11-21-09
It’s so tough not to read between the lines with this, especially since I spend some of my time in a critical care setting with patients just like Mike has been. That said, I am cautiously optimistic for him. One thing is for sure, now that the sedation has been turned off, he needs to wake up or show some other signs of purposeful response to stimuli. C’mon Mike, we are all pulling for you to get better!
Take care, amigo. Get well soon!
Hello Everyone, Just an update. Mike is having surgery at 9:30 this morning to remove vent and put a trache tube in and also a feeding tube. Leah says the new cat scans do show he had mutiple strokes. I know it doesn’t sound too good but let’s all just remember sometimes the healing process is a long one. Please Keep them in your prayers.
Mike did come through the surgery but his blood pressure spiked and it took awhile to get him stable. Hopefully he will wake up sometime today and they can get a prognosis. Leah says they will probably do another cat scan today or Friday. Please keep them both in your thoughts and prayers.
I am Mike’s sister. All life support was removed today. He was moved to a “comfort” area of the hospital where Leah can be with him 24/7 until hospice is needed to take over. Thank you for all of your prayers and good wishes. He loved you all and told us crazy stories of his chilehead friends.
I am so sorry Sue. I live locally so please let me know what I can do.
Such sad news, I’m sorry to hear that Sue. Although it’s not what we’ve wanted to hear. Leah, Mike, you, and everyone affected by this continues to be in our thoughts and prayers. If there’s anything that we can do, please let me know.
Thanks everyone. Leah made mention to me this morning that Scottie posted the pic of Mike on his cooler. SCOTTIE, could you please forward that pic and any others that you or ANYONE else has of Mike/Leah at the shows. We would appreciate them as I would like to add them to a slide show for his Memorial Service. They can be sent to me at sueledlow “at” yahoo.com. Leah has not been at a computer for a couple of weeks, so she has not been able to respond to any emails but she does have Mike’s cell phone with her; feel free to call her. Thanks again all for your prayers.
How sad. I will certainly miss his enthusiasm and love for the business. My heart goes out to all his family, friends and especially Leah.
Mike Cates sadly left this earth on Sunday. Wherever he is I hope there is an open bar and the raindrops taste like vodka and they play Sweet Home Alabama all Summer Long…..We are sure going to miss you buddy!
So sorry to hear. I didn’t personally know Mike, other than meeting him the few times at Jungle Jim’s, but he always talked to to me as if we knew each other for a long time. He will surely be missed by family and friends.
Sorry to hear that..condolences for his family.
