While at North Market’s Fiery Food Show I was handed a couple Montezuma® Brand items to be reviewed. This review is on Triple XXX Salsa Habanero. This is my first salsa to review and salsa is what got me into this whole chilehead culture to begin with.
Ingredients: tomatoes, tomato puree, onions, habanero & chile peppers, tomato paste, lemon juice, vinegar, herbs and spices.
The tomato products are the majority of this salsa, mostly paste and puree with some small diced tomato chunks. I see a few chunks of green chiles and an occasional bit of onion. Doesn’t look much different than most store bought brands of salsa.
I dipped a chip and took a bite and right away the habanero heat hits my tongue. To be honest I wasn’t expecting it and started coughing from it. Once I regained my composure I tried another and realized that it wasn’t just another store bought type of salsa. This salsa has the heat and taste that I enjoy. My only complaint with it is all the tomato. It reminds me of Pace or Chi-Chi’s salsa with a kick. I like seeing more chunks of peppers and pepper seeds and onion bits.
Triple XXX Salsa Habanero is quite tasty and I enjoyed the habanero burn. I have actually sat here and eaten half the jar while typing this. Chuck, tasty stuff, but in my opinion ease up on the tomatoes and get some more pepper and onion chunks going on in it.

My past experience with Chuck Evan’s salsas is a hit or miss quality to them. I think he is quite clever with the ingredient combinations, but the ones with the squash in them are just not up my alley. When Chuck inquired to doing a review for his new and hottest of his salsa line I wasn’t sure what to expect. I got the jars at the North Market Show and I never had a chance to taste it prior to this review because I came back too late when the sample jar was empty. I would have to hope for the best.

My first impression was a shock because the heat of the salsa was up there and it caught me off guard. I didn’t think Chuck’s version of hot was this hot. It really is XXX hot. Even with the heat the way it was, it burst with tomatoey goodness in every bite. The tomatoes tasted very fresh like the salsa was just made. I was quite impressed as I worked my way down the jar. I was going to use some with an omelet, but with the salsa being so spicy, I craved me some queso dip.

Adding some Velveeta cheese with the 1/2 jar of salsa and a little bit of nuking technology, lo and behold, queso dippity-do-da! I used my favorite Multi-grain Tostito chips and it was the best meal I had all week. It was more than a snack and became a meal in the end, and had the endorphin rush to boot.
Overall, I am proud to say that I feel this is the best salsa Chuck Evans has come up with to date. It made me yearn for more, and I think that is what you want in a salsa, isn’t it? Well done Chuck!

I agree with HUDD, it is a bit tomatoey, but still a very top notch sauce.
nice review.
