Justin’s Corner: Endorphin Rush Beyond Hot Sauce…Retro Review

    By Buddah | October 30, 2008 |

My expectations of this hot sauce before opening the bottle was that it was going to be a very hot sauce. Unopened, the entire top of the bottle was a black liquid that I mistakenly took for extract. I also expected the sauce to be very thick because I really had to shake it for a while to mix it up. It turns out after opening it that it was just really full, and the black liquid must have been the soy sauce.

I tried this sauce first a little on my finger expecting extreme heat, and when it wasn’t hot I poured it onto a chicken chimichanga. The molasses in this sauce gave it a little hint of sweetness, but it still tasted pretty bad. If the sauce would have been as hot as I thought it was going to be, then the flavor would have been tolerable since I am the kind of person who usually puts heat over flavor, but this sauce didn’t have either. I have had store bought non-extract habanero sauces that were hotter than this one, and they tasted much better. Since I hate to let a bottle go to waste and I didn’t take pictures of my chimichanga, I decided to make a plate of chili cheese fries a couple days later. I just used store bought frozen fries deep fried for crispiness because the chili cheese makes them soggy after a while. I also used Hormel turkey chili without beans and tostitos nacho cheese. I put quite a bit of the Endorphin Rush Beyond hot sauce on my fries first, then the chili, then the cheese, and topped it all of with some jarred sliced jalapenos. The chili cheese covered up some of the flavor of the sauce, but it also covered up any heat that there was, and I have to say that the fries would have been much better without it.

Overall, I would not recommend this sauce.

    Ingredients:
Tomato paste, water, pepper extract, vinegar, sugar, molasses, soy sauce.

    Taste: 2/10

Heat: 3/10 on the extract scale

Consistency: 4/10 the thickness of the sauce is a little thicker than I like it but not bad. The reason I only gave it a 4 is because it clogs the top of the bottle and I need to clean it out every time I use the sauce or else I get nothing out.

Label: 4/10 It’s nothing fancy. The reason I gave it a 4 is because after trying it I decided I don’t like the name. If it was a hotter sauce it would be ok, but this sauce is not hot enough to be called endorphin rush.

Overall rating / Recommendation: 3/10 I would not recommend this sauce, after trying it I regret buying the bottle even at 40% off, and I am planning to take what remains of it to work and making it a community bottle because I wont finish it myself.

Price: 6.50 for a 5oz bottle, (that’s what the price tag on my bottle says anyway).

This was one of the first non-Tabasco sauces I ever tried. That was when I had first discovered hot sauce, and just wanted things hot with no concern for flavor. I picked this up at a local liquor store and used it to heat up salsa. Problem is, it tastes like what I would imagine battery acid tastes. Needless to say, I never used it again.

It’s funny, years later, looking at the ingredient list the first thing I notice is the absence of actual peppers. Just extracts and a handful of things that don’t sound like they should go together.

The little heat that is there dissipates so incredibly fast and the taste is horrific.

I actually like this sauce. And I’m not an extract nut.

It just goes to show the difference in peoples tastes. I thought the sweetness of the sauce and the “mildness” of the extract worked well together.

Glad I didn’t read this about 5 years ago. That’s about when I purchased my first bottle of Endorphin Rush and have and will continue to buy it. I would bet money that for the MAJORITY of the population this stuff it TOO hot. Myself on the other hand it is just about as hot as I want. I use to take whole chickens and inject this stuff into about 10 places on the bird before cooking, the molasses and soy make for a nice sweet taste and the extract adds a good kick. I bet that there have been more bottles of Endorphin Rush sold that almost any other hot sauce out there. The stuff is tried and true. Lately I haven’t used it soo much but I might have to break out a bottle. Thanks for reminding me what I have been missing. Justin don’t take this personal-it’s just my opinion brother. Seems like someone a while back ripped on Jamaica Hell Fire-Doc’s Special, of which I also like. Oh Well. More for me.

      Morning Gang!! Happy Friday!!

Wait, you mean two people can have different opinions? Doesn’t one of you have to be stupid or fat, or something? One of you HAS to be right… right? :grinnn:

I,d like to say I like this sauce. The molasses & soy sauce add a great flavor combo that works well together It don’t cover that metallic flavor of the extract. But all in all it works as a beginner extract sauce. Hot but not to hot.

Great to see Mick from Kato’s posting as well.

I’m not a huge fan of extracts but I’ve always thought the taste of ER falls pretty much inline with the rest of them plus it’s kind of a classic.

      Good Retro Review Justin.

this is one of the first review i ever wrote, you can say that i suck as a reviewer and should be banned from ttf and i wouldnt take offense. honestly i kind of want to try it again myself. i wouldnt say that i dont do the extreme sauces anymore but its not all about extracts like when i first descovered them so perhaps my opinion has changed. i remember throwing my food away because i couldnt stand the flavor but i could of used it the wrong way also i didnt realy experiment as much back then as i do now.
