Kato’s Meaner Greener & Habanero Chocolate Bar

    By Buddah | March 17, 2009 |

    Blackeye the Pirate

    Meaner Greener Hot Sauce:

Kato’s Meaner Greener is great for those people out there who enjoy tomatillo sauce. I am a big fan of Mexican food and this sauce really hit the spot. Meaner Greener contains tomatillos, green habaneros, garlic, onions, cilantro, cider vinegar, lime juice, and various spices. This sauce tastes great on any Mexican food and the spice isn’t too overwhelming. It seems to concentrate more on flavor, and is a blend of delicious, all natural ingredients. I sampled this sauce on Mexican food from burritos to quesadillas, and even used it to make some jambalaya. Its consistency is a little thinner, but is a little chunkier as many tomatillo sauces are.

Kato’s Meaner Greener also makes a great salsa for tortilla chips. I highly recommend this sauce to anyone who likes Mexican or any type of tomatillo salsa.

    Kato’s Habanero Chocolate:

To many people, mixing peppers and chocolate sounds a little less than appetizing. Before trying the chocolate, I consulted the sous chef at the restaurant I work at. He assured me that chocolate and spice mix quite well. Nevertheless, I had to try it, and I was pleasantly surprised. The milk chocolate flavor takes over at first, followed by the tingling spicy sensation that chiliheads love. I even let some of friends, who aren’t as big into spicy foods as I am, sample some of this bar. They all enjoyed it and were as shocked as I was. I recommend that anyone try this chocolate bar. Not only is it an interesting experience, but a tasty and spicy chocolate bar as well.

    Meaner Greener Hot Sauce:

Exile That Boring Food To the Doghouse!

Kato’s Meaner Greener and my Sweet and Sour Chicken Stir Fry…First the smell…Green! It smells great, like a fresh green habanero and a little hint of lime and garlic. It smells mild not sharp. The Spoon Test, and yes it is very mild, but tastes very very fresh and even a little sweet. The lime is there man, and even a little apple. I’m gettin’ spoiled here man, it is very flavorful. There is an ocean of happiness going on, and now after 10 minutes even a burn in the back of my throat. A nice mild burn, and a yummy aftertaste. It made my sweet and sour chicken into a nice spicy almost Cantonese style dish.

I like the thickness of the sauce, and the bits of seed and pepper. Thick without being too thick. A nice touch there! The heat is very refreshing. It has just a tad of heat, nothing burning, but just enough to give you the hab-kick. It actually made my headache go away. I have sampled just a little Kato’s sauce in the past, and I wanted more. I really like the way they blend the sauces. I hate runny sauce, it takes away from the experience. Kato has nailed the consistency as far as I am concerned, and I love dogs. So it is obvious that I have become a fan, but I don’t really see how anyone could resist this stuff. It is mild enough for anyone to enjoy and has the delicious habanero flavor that even an experienced chilehead could enjoy.

I am gonna have to say as far as the mild category of pepper sauce goes..there are few that can touch the flavor of Kato’s Meaner Greener, and in my last 3 reviews I have been lucky enough to taste some of the finest milds I have ever had my hands on, oh lucky me. You have got to get some and you’ll see what I mean. I give Kato’s Meaner Greener a 9.013/10 on my old scale and a 7.75/10 on the new scale. It is gonna be one of the best green sauces you’ll ever taste. I promise you that!

    B.D.
P.S. Add it to your Mac N Cheese for a kickin’ snack!

    Kato’s Habanero Chocolate:

Let me say, I am allergic to chocolate, but I am a trooper. I hate dark chocolate, my wife always has a ton of it in stock, and I have no cravings for it at all. When I received this gift from Kato I was scared, and put it directly into the freezer. It stayed there for a week or two, and I eventually thawed it.

Cute package and all. I decided to trick my friend Kyle with a piece. It was fun to watch his face as he was unexpectantly burned with a piece of chocolate. He fussed and whined until I gave him some buttermilk, which he spat upon thy floor…so damn funny! I like to do that to him periodically like my naga-savina hamburger helper I fixed last week…whooooo-weee! That he still bitches about! Anyways, his reaction got me curious so I downed the rest of the dark chocolate bar. I must say it was very interesting, the pepper and chocolate rush was sensational, but mild. It burned way more than a Hershey bar! I was pleasantly surprised, it took the yuckiness of the dark chocolate away, and made me smile as a small bead of sweat crept across my brow. If it came in milk chocolate form I would probably eat one every day for breakfast. It is a fine idea though, and perfect for a good joke to play on your friends.

I give it a 9/10 and admire Kato’s products as a whole. I’m looking forward to some new ideas from them. Give this sweet burnin’ candy bar a shot!

After reading and editing the other reviewers’ thoughts, I had to add this little addition to my review. It seems like perhaps the bottle I received content-wise was a little bit different than the bottle the other reviewers received. So as you read my critique, take in mind what they wrote in describing their product as opposed to what I said. Perhaps, I got a bad bottle that wasn’t completely processed, I am not sure. Perhaps, my bottle is the way the sauce was attended. I will let you be the judge and Mick of Kato’s can sort things out after the review is posted. On to my review…

I have had my ups and downs with the Kato’s products. The two previous bottles…Hemi Sauce and Island Sauce were extraordinairely good hot sauces. The Island Sauce being my favorite, and one of the most unique and yet best sauces that I have had since becoming a reviewer for TTF. The first review, Kato’s Down South left me wanton. How would this Meaner Greener sauce compare to the others?

Meaner Greener looked good in the bottle, so I had high hopes, but once I opened it up and poured it out, my hopes began to drift away. I try not to let my pre-conceived notions bear any weight on a review so as much as I did not like what I saw, I kept an open mind. I was hankering for some Idahocan Instant Mashed potatoes, so I made me some and slopped some Meaner Greener on top.

It came out instantly with no fuss almost like water out of a faucet. It had some pieces floating in the liquid, but it didn’t make me want it more. The color is an unpleasant green bordering on hints of clear brown if that makes any sense at all. It was not appetizing looking, but as I said before I would not let it sway my tastebuds any. If I didn’t like the looks of things I wouldn’t be friends with any of the TTF crowd. ;)

I had several forkfuls of the mashed taters, but I was finding it difficult to find the flavor. The one thing I love about having these taters is that they make the flavors of hot sauces come through so much. The sauces usually make such a nice addition to the meal much like traditional gravy does. Yet, with the Meaner Greener I could not find much flavor in my mouth. I took a sample straight from the bottle onto a spoon to see if I could find the flavor. It was there all right. I immediately tasted my favorite herb, cilantro and a touch of garlic. At that point I looked at the ingredient list and was happy I was correct. It really wasn’t bad at all, very fresh tasting. There was no bold in your face flavor here, and that might be the reason it didn’t work on my taters. I think this sauce was diluted way too much in the process.

I thought the flavor would pop better if I made chicken salad with it. I poured in a good amount, mixed in some mayo with my chicken in a can. It is my favorite type of lunch, and works well with most hot sauces. Well after sitting in the fridge overnight, and taking it to work with me the next day, there was so little flavor coming from the chicken I thought I was having just straight chicken salad. If it doesn’t work this way, then I really don’t think it will work with any other food choices. You can’t dunk things in it because it is mostly liquid and has maybe 5% cling factor. I feel at a loss.

Like I mentioned above, I just may have had a bad bottle. It happens, but if it is supposed to be this way, then I don’t think this is a good sauce at all. I would recommend try thickening it with more ingredients because I don’t think this is a total lost cause. The flavor might be minimal, but there is still something good that I can taste with that fresh cilantro.

I am not into dark chocolate, so I passed the bar onto my good friend Eric. Here is his review…

    Eric

    Kato’s Habanero Chocolate Bar

Ingredients: Sugar, chocolate liqueur, pure habanero, powder, fractionated, palm kernel oil and hydrogenated palm oil, cocoa powder, non-fat dry milk, milk fat, soya lecithin and vanillin.

I was quite pleased with this chocolate bar. The chocolate alone had a very smooth and sweet dark chocolate taste like something you may find in high end popular chocolates. The only thing that bothered me was a grainy consistency I noticed while chewing. That quickly went away as soon as the impressive heat kicked in. Until now I did not think I would come across a great tasting chocolate with heat. Nice job Kato Productions!

    Heat Level: (4.5 / 10)

    My Rating: 2.5 (EGG Scale)

After 25 years in NM I still dont like tomatillos. They seem slimy when cooked, like okra, and to me the taste is just wrong. I would eat the chocolate though.
