‘Great American BBQ Showdown’ to debut Sunday

Will the appearance in Food Network’s “The Great American BBQ Showdown,” premiering Sunday propel Greenwood competitive barbecue team Divine Smoke beyond the proverbial 15 minutes of fame, making the team synonymous with top-notch South Carolina barbecue? Maybe.

Divine Smoke team members and spouses, Dennis and Debbie Dill, are eagerly waiting to watch the Food Network television segment, which debuts at 8 p.m. Sunday.

The Dills are keeping fingers crossed that national exposure leads to more, for them, and their fellow team member, David Hord.

“This exposure definitely will give Divine Smoke opportunities to do things we might not be able to otherwise,” Dennis said. “You want to get your name out there and for people to remember who you are when you go to a cookoff. Hopefully, the exposure will get the team invited to events and take us to a different level of competition.

“A goal of ours would be to be named Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) team of the year, but we couldn’t do that unless we start doing 30 or so cook-offs a year and gain points for our highest finishes.”

David Hord said the Food Network filming experience was “definitely fun.”

“It’s gong to be interesting to see how they put in all together,” Horde said, noting he is in the process of opening his own barbecue restaurant.

The South Carolina Festival of Discovery is a KCBS-sanctioned event.

In 2009, Divine Smoke competed in about six cook-offs and averages eight per year.

That’s not to say Divine Smoke is just small potatoes when it comes to barbecue. The team is already a heavyweight in its own right.

Divine Smoke entered its first barbecue competition in 2001, at Greenwood’s first Festival of Discovery, what is now a major barbecue and blues festival that had been named among the Top 20 Southeast Tourism Society events.

“Our first competition was the light that ignited the big fire,” Debbie said.

A few short years later, in October 2008, Divine Smoke was invited to the prestigious Jack Daniels’ World Invitational in Lynchburg, Tenn., at the Jack Daniels’ distillery.

I’ve seen Divine Smoke somewhere. Must’ve been Lynchburg. We go there and Indy Rib Fest and we’ve went a couple times to a big BBQ event in Nashville at Opryland Resort.
Food Network should be a big boost for them.

I didn’t even know about the Festival of Discovery until the event last year. I wasn’t able to make it, even though it’s literally in my back yard. Downtown where it’s held is only a few blocks away. It’s on my calendar as a “must do” this year. :tu:
