Naga Saurus/SoreAss Proof Set
By DK | May 23, 2008 |
Well, I’m not really sure where to start with his post, it’s just something I wanted to throw together quickly to share a little something with my fellow chileheads. I’m sure most everyone here knows the story of me collaborating with CaJohn on the creation of the labels for the Naga Saurus and Naga SoreAss hot sauces. The bottles pictured are the rest of that story.
The first picture above is of labels that CaJohn sent to me of “proofs” that he would print as I sent him changes in the design as we were creating the label. We would change a font, remove an image, move something around, resize, lots of different things. Each time, CaJohn would print a label on his printer in his office to see how it looked and provide me with feedback or ideas about changes. Well, he ended up with a little stack of labels that he didn’t throw away. Instead of throwing them away, he sent them to me. Fifteen labels, each one different. Some differences smaller than others, some are more obvious. I also received 15 bottles of unlabeled sauce to apply the labels to.
So here they are, all 15 bottles labeled. From design, to proofs, to proto’s, to final product. These bottles fill a gap in my collection that I didn’t know existed.
Other bottles beside the proofs that I have are pictured just above. From left to right, Final production glossy label Saurus and SoreAss, First ever reviewed bottle of Naga SoreAss (Thanks Justin!), and first run “proto” bottles of each label. All bottles are signed, except for the regular production ones and the “proof” set. I hope Cajohn’s signing hand is ready when I visit JJ’s in August for the Weekend Of Fire!
The clickable pics below are for a better look at some of the differences great and small that are on the labels. The pics are lage, so dial-up users beware. Just click the pic, it should open in a new window.
CaJohn, THANK YOU sir. Thanks for the “proof” bottles, thanks for asking me to do the label, and thanks for all of your kindness and generosity. This project was a blast.

I’ll give ya a buck fiddy and 26 doggie treats for the whole lot.
Not fur sale.
Now that’s a cool set of collectibles.
27 treats?
I’m gonna have a talk with Parker about finally gettin’ you fixed.
Thanks Hudd!
I normally keep each variation that I save out of the program, but actually having them on a bottle on the shelf instead of in a file on my hard drive I think is the coolest part about it.

Hey TBS, you coming to Weekend of Fire?
Yeah :nerd:, all plans as of right now, point to YES. Sorry, i didn’t get your e-mail in time for the past weekend. Hope you did well.
Glad to hear you will be there. I think we need a bigger TTF booth.
I raised over $700, so not too shabby for one weekend. My walker’s page is still taking donations, so if you want to give, feel free to add to the total.
