    Review: Illegal Alien Hot Sauce

Last year when I first started asking for people’s opinions on hot sauces, someone gave me a recommendation to try this one. I picked up a bottle at Jungle Jim’s back in August along with a load of other bottles to try out. Since I don’t open all my bottles at once, it takes me a while to get to them. Illegal Alien, I was told was a mild hot sauce, so I didn’t put it on top of my list. Well, after the fiasco I had yesterday with some really hot CaJohn products and what they did to my innards, I turned to the mild to give my belly a needed sabbatical.

I enjoyed the cute label with the crossing the border influence, the barbed wire fence and real aliens looking like border crossing immigrants. It’s a nice parody. The sauce is darkish red-brown, and I was surprised it was a cayenne sauce. I actually didn’t read the ingredients until I tasted what I thought was cilantro and had to check to see if I was right. When I see a movie, I like not knowing too much so I can be surprised by the plot and go with the flow. I do the same with hot sauce, unless the main part of the label says it all, e.g. Killer Jalapeno, Cape Fear Smolderin’ Chipotle, etc.

For my meal, I decided to try some on my egg omelet. I added some mild-medium salsa and cheddar cheese inside, which is my standard at home omelet combination. I don’t like to have too hot of a salsa so I get an idea of the heat of the product I am trying out. My first bite just had cheese and egg on it just to see how it worked by itself. So as I said above I got a hint of my favorite herb, cilantro. Kudos for that alone, but the flavor of Illegal Alien is actually very tasty on my omelet. It is different from the other cayenne pepper sauces, and if I didn’t see the cayenne in the list of ingredients, I would not have guessed it was that type of pepper. Despite the mild innuendo I received, the condiment had a slight tingle on my tongue. Nothing that made me sweat, but I did notice the slight heat in the sauce. It is a good sauce, but I wanted to try it applied to some chicken, which is the meal of choice most of the time at the Buddah Estate.

I actually was doing a review of another hot sauce, so much sweeter than this product, and I used them both going back and forth. I love going to a restaurant where you are given multiple dipping sauces for your meals. The rotation was fantastic, but since that is another review, back to Illegal Alien. I am using a simple quarter dark meat of the ol’ thigh and drumstick. After removing the skin, I got right to it. Dipping into this cayenne sauce, I notice why I am such a vinegar hot sauce fan. I think it is my tabasco upbringing, and having that over the last 10 years like it was part of every chicken or tuna salad recipe. There is something about Illegal Alien that I wish was added to it. Heat. I want to see the tasty concoction kicked up a few notches. I am not asking for tear in the eye heat, just a little something that would make me sweat.
I guess that would be hard to do without ruining the recipe, but this is a good product and I would give this as a gift to a lower level/beginner chilehead.
