Review: Spice Rack Chocolates- En Fuego (On Fire) Collection

    By Buddah | November 26, 2008 |

I met the Spice Rack Chocolates crew while attending the DC Metropolitan Food Show a few weeks back. Before going to the show I did a little research on some of the companies attending, one of which was Spice Rack Chocolates. I found out that they have won some awards for their unique type of chocolates. Spice Rack is more than just a name, it is about using the spices that Mother Nature have given us in some delicious ways with chocolate. Amongst some of the chocolates is their En Fuego(On Fire) Collection, using the spices that I never imagined would work with chocolate.

From the info off their website, their awards suggest that they know what they are doing:

Best New food product in Virginia 08

“Great Taste 08″ Winner of Best new product

Taste of Fredericksburg 2007 “Most Unique” and “Best Dessert”

Fredericksburg Guidebook 2006 “Freddy Award” for Best Chocolate in Fredericksburg

I was very happy when they asked me to do a review for their En Fuego Collection of chocolates. Unfortunately, they use mostly dark chocolate and I just do not like the dark variety. So, much like the other spicy chocolate reviews I needed to do, I got my bud Eric to do it for me. Eric in turn got his lovely wife Shannon to add her thoughts as they shared the box of spicy confections. Thank you both for helping me out with this review, but especially Spice Rack for making it all possible. Enjoy.

    Review by: ERIC

    Three pieces of each flavor:

    Japanese Wasabi
    Intense Indian Curry
    Crushed Thai Chilies
    Fiery African Cinnamon
    Spicy Cayenne and Chili Powder
Ingredients: Semisweet chocolate [(chocolate liquor, sugar, cocoa butter), soy lecithin (a vegetable-based emulsifier), and natural vanilla], cayenne, chili powder, Maharajah curry powder, Thai chilies, chipotle peppers, pure wasabi powder, certified organic cocoa butter and natural colors.

This box of chocolates had a very unique taste in each bite of it’s 5
piece selection. I really like the recommended methods to best sample
the chocolates. Up front though the “layered” taste you are told you
should receive when eating each piece seemed to be reaching a bit too
far. Boy, was I off. Unique is an understatement when you think of
chocolate mixed with the various spices. These spice filled chocolates are
not very hot & spicy, but will certainly catch your attention when you
try these for yourself. Below are the reactions from my wife and I as
    we sampled each piece.

    Yellow – Smoky Chipotle Pepper
Nice smooth chocolatey taste and spicy flavor with a little kick of
spice. Not overwhelming, just a nice combination.

    White – Wasabi
Could taste an essence of spice, but no noticeable wasabi hit/taste,
wishing there were. Good chocolate though.

Pink – Spicy Cayenne and Chili Powder
There is hint of chili powder taste, then there is a mix with the cayenne, followed by the chocolate. Heavy cayenne hit at the end. Not crazy about this one.

    Green – Thai Chilies
I taste something at the beginning (powdery spice). Mild spice taste, nice wash
of chocolate, and a hint of pepper flavor at end. Very nice.

    Purple – Indian Curry
There is a hint of curry taste at the beginning, then the chocolate kicks in. Nice curry
chocolate combination at end. This was my favorite.

    Review by: SHANNON:

    Yellow – Smoky Chipotle Pepper
Can not imagine Smokey Chipotle with chocolate. I did not like this
taste. Gross. Smokey ruins this combo.

    White – Wasabi
Tastes like plain chocolate. No spice taste.

Pink – Spicy Cayenne and Chili Powder
This was good. Nice spice flavor that lingers.

    Green – Thai Chilies
Nice medium kick of spice with no specific flavor, but I feel the heat. If you
like the spice, this is good chocolate.

    Purple – Indian Curry
Interesting way to eat curry. A pleasant aftertaste, and was my favorite.

    Heat Level: (2 / 10)

    My Rating: 3 (EGG Scale)

    EGG Rating Scale:
1 : Novelty or Party Favor / Would not buy it again
2 : Has potential / May try it again
3 : Great taste / Would likely buy it again
4 : Excellent taste / Staple home product
5 : Incredible taste / Gotta have it and will go outta my way to get it
