Multi-Review: The Three Amigos vs Habanero Punch Hot Sauce

    By admin | December 3, 2008 |

Welcome to another Taste The Fear Multi-Review! For your viewing pleasure, four videos are included along with the written reviews. Now here’s a little something from Parker to get this party started…
    ~Cap’n Bones~

The General, Justin, and Parker, all volunteered to do a video review for 2 hot sauces we were lucky enough to receive from the good people at the Savory Hot Sauce Company. Their two products are Habanero Punch and Habanero Punch TKO. The TKO version is the Houston Hot Sauce People’s Choice Award Winner of the Hottest at Show for 2007, and still reigning champion because the 2008 show was cancelled.

In the making of the General’s video, he had some minor difficulties, and the video is a little off kilter. Which to tell you the truth, makes it more and more entertaining as the video moves along.
This very well could be the best part of the video because it is like watching the old fashion Japanese Monster movies like Godzilla and Mothra. You will hear the words of our boy Troy (GeneralLee), but you will notice his mouth moves at a whole different rate.

We also have the pre-video review for both the Habanero Punch and the TKO version by first Justin and then by General Lee. I also included a link below to Justin’s video just in case you missed him rock the house with the TKO version. In their own words this is what they had to say about it:

    Review by JUSTIN

    Habanero Punch

I got this sauce and the Habanero Punch T.K.O to do reviews on at the same time. The ingredient lists are similar, but the Habanero Punch is lacking the extract. The dominant smells are honey and garlic. The sauce smells and tastes sweet, but it’s mostly a honey flavor which is what I would prefer if I was in the mood for something sweet. Sauces like this I usually use on either breakfast or with cheese and crackers. I tried it first on a breakfast sandwich with egg and sausage, and the garlic flavor was stronger when it was being used in a larger quantity than on the finger. It was good on the sandwich, but messy because it didn’t stay on the sandwich very well. The heat was there, yet barely noticeable and didn’t help to balance out the sweetness at all.

My next test was with brie and crackers, I had some Joan of Arc Brie that I found at the local grocery store on sale and it was really good. The sauce just made it better, and this is how I finished off the bottle. Although it was an improvement on my food it is definitely not the best sauce of its kind and I most likely won’t buy more of it. When compared to similar types of sauces this one is not my favorite for a few reasons, mainly that there is not enough heat to balance out the sweetness of the honey. The second reason is that I would like it a little thicker than it is. Habanero Punch is not really too bad though, but it does run off food and make a very sticky mess if it gets on your hands or anything else.

The one thing that I did like about it though is the garlic. I know a lot of people enjoy sweet sauces with any meal of the day but I only really eat them on breakfast or for a snack. I have tried a lot of sweeter sauces that are mixed with ingredients that really don’t go so well with breakfast foods. If I’m in the mood for something sweet I want it to be a simple taste and not have too many over-powering flavors to give it a really complex flavor. Just because of that it is hard for me to really find anything new to try as far as this type of sauce goes. The garlic, habaneros, and liquid smoke all blend really well in this sauce and are flavors that can be used on any meal. It gets a big plus for that, but all in all it is just a little too sweet without enough heat to back it up for my liking.
Overall, I would give this sauce a 5/10

    Review by GENERALLEE

First of all I would like to thank God for blessing me with this gift of fire eating and thank Buddah for putting this review together. This review coincides with Justin’s Review, but mine is unfortunately just 2 months late.

I first tried the regular Habanero Punch from the Savory Hot Sauce Company.

The ingredients are pretty much habanero peppers, honey, and garlic – more items but I doubt they would affect the flavor. I dug right into it. Bam, garlic, then sweet honey, then some heat. I did like this, and then I didnt also. I did like it cause it had a slew of garlic in it, a bit sweet and there was a bit of heat (bout 5 or so). I didnt like it cause the consistency was irregular. Kinda like a syrupy kinda consistency. I think the honey overtook the depth of the sauce. It also tasted too chemicaly inhanced. Not like Barry Bonds, but more like non-fresh tasting hot sauce. It smelled ok, but it just wasnt my cup of tea. I had hope for it, but I honestly couldnt see myself buying this one.

Next I moved onto the Habanero Punch TKO. (same as above but with a slew of extract)

I was warned by Justin that this was warm so i knew what i was getting into. I cracked it open, and I have to say it smelled better than the non-extract Habanero Punch. I jumped right into it cause I aint afraid and Bo-Yeah! Bringing the heat! The bite was instant. It was warm and very extract-y. I searched high and low for some flavor besides extract flavor and I came up empty. Maybe just a tad bit of pepper, but the garlic and honey did not shine in this one. The heat was there for a bit, but after about 4-5 minutes, it went away. A bit lingered around, but nothing too bad. I may use a drop or two in a chili dish or something but other than that, I got no recommendation. I do have to say that bout 1.5 hours down the road in time, my gut felt like a gator was wrastling with a water buffalo. The pain was only about 45 seconds long in length, but I do have to say it was there.
After it went away, I had no other side affects. I cant say I liked this one too much either. Cool label I have to say and the concept of the name was there, but I wish the flavor was as much of a TKO as the label.

General Lee signing off for now. Please look for more of my entertaining reviews in the near future…

So without further adieu, Taste the Fear presents General Lee and his bout with Savory Hot Sauce Company’s Habanero Punch and Habanero Punch TKO.

      That stuff is HOT.

I did enjoy the non-extract version, but like Troy said, It’s good for pranks but not really for food.

I never did enjoy extract sauces, so no big surprise to me.

Parker, Love the first video clip! It pretty much says it all. I just had to laugh. That was a good one! I’m not an extract fan at all so I don’t see buying that version.
