Multi-Review: Sugar Fire Dessert Sauce by Torchbearer Sauces

    By Buddah | August 25, 2008 |

Once again, Taste The Fear brings to you another Multi-Review for Torchbearer Sauces.
The Torchbearer “Honey Barbecue” review can be found HERE…Now on to the reviewer’s table to sample a taste of another one of the products from Torchbearer Sauces.

Torchbearer Sauces, the guys with the cartoon-y labels have a dessert sauce in there award winning lineup. In fact, their Sugarfire Hot Sauce is all ready an award winner. Now they have pumped-up the heat on their Sugarfire recipe and made it hotter while still in an 8 oz jar. Enter “Super Sugarfire” Hot Sauce, a dessert sauce that will give you a sweet burn.

Ingredients: Papaya, Mango, Mandarin Oranges, Habanero Peppers, Sugar, and other all-natural spices.

I will say I had a lot of fun with this sauce. What is impressive is that if you use this sauce sparingly, you don’t actually get an over-abundance of sugar. There are 15 1 tbsp servings per jar, with only 1g of sugar and 2 carbs per serving. That is not bad for a dessert sauce. There is also no sodium or fat in the product, another plus. When I first received this product I was racking my brain on ways to use it. I found 4 delicious ways to make the most of Torchbearer’s All Natural Sugar Fire Dessert Sauce. The first was to actually not use it as a dessert sauce. I have fallen in love with the stuffed tilapia, and it has found a home in my kitchen over the past month. I buy it all ready freshly stuffed with crabmeat and spices and is ready to be tossed in the oven with a touch of olive oil in the pan. With a little bit of Super Sugarfire I made it a dish I would eat over and over again. No need to marinade, just pour it on top of your fish. I wish I had a pic to show you, but I lost it somewhere in the computer. Believe me, it looked and tasted great.

The next way I used it was an old spin-off of a South Beach diet recipe. You take ricotta cheese some splenda and add cinnamon or cocoa, and a drop of vanilla extract. What I did here was use the ricotta and spenda with a little Super Sugarfire sauce. I guess I didn’t need the splenda, but I thought it might be better for the consistency of the recipe. It was d-licious. As for can see I gourmet’d it up a bit with some whipped cream and a drizzle of Super Sugarfire sauce. A dessert made for the royalty in you. I loved every spoonful, and the throat burned a little as it went down.

The third way was with some vanilla yogurt. Just enough to mix in. It was pretty good here too. Let’s face it vanilla is too boring. This is the first time I ever felt a heat in my yogurt, and I liked it. Vanilla also made a nice contrast in the flavor like a fruit yogurt. It reminded me a Dannon Yogurt with the Fruit on the bottom that you had to stir so you got some on each spoonful. I had to add a little more of the sauce to my yogurt to even things out.

The last thing I did with the Super Sugarfire was to use it in the ingredients of a homemade smoothie. I first tried it with what was probably the wrong list of ingredients. The second try worked like a charm, and since I experimented, so should you. I bought a smoothie maker/blender a couple of years ago and I only break it out during the hot days of summer, and the day I had my smoothie it broke 90°F. A perfect day for something cold. To keep it healthy I used sugar-free Tang with frozen peaches and pineapple and a few strawberries along with one tbsp of Super Sugarfire. The frozen fruit acts like ice and turns the liquid base into a frozen slushy. The was very good with a small throat burn after each swallow, but nothing that would take away from the overall refreshing quality of the smoothie.

Big Time could never satisfy his flavor tooth until his mamaw gave him Sugar Fire. He’s never had problems finding good flavor since.
This sums up the little story that’s printed on the label. I find the stories on the Torchbearer products quite interesting.

So, Sugar Fire is a dessert sauce. I’ve never tried a sauce on dessert before, so this item intrigued me. Going to the website I saw that it’s good in apple pie. Well I didn’t make an apple pie but after tasting a spoonful of it out of the jar, I can understand why it would be good that way. Sugar Fire has a nice sweet smell with the distinct habanero aroma in it. As I was taking a spoonful from the jar the texture somewhat resembled apple sauce. I took the spoonful and I got a very pleasant sweet taste that then turns to hab heat. I’m thinking, oh yeah, this would be good in an apple pie filling.

I look through the cabinets to see if I have anything I can fix and add Sugar Fire too. There is nothing but Tostitos, so I gave that a try. Nah! Not a chip sauce for sure. I ran down to the store, got a half gallon of vanilla ice cream, scooped some out and used Sugar Fire as an ice cream topping. This was a taste sensation. The ice cream was sweetened by the Sugar Fire, as the habanero heat comes on pretty good, and then the ice cream starts cooling it down. I really liked it that way. I had all my notes for the review and was satisfied that I liked it on ice cream and I’m sure I’ll like it in apple pie. It will be in the next apple pie made, in it or on it, with a scoop of ice cream for sure.

The next morning we were having breakfast and we had Buttermilk Grands. The wife says “hey try the Sugar Fire on a biscuit”. It is similar to apple butter in appearance, so why not. Yes sir, I liked it this way also.

I really enjoyed the Sugar Fire! The sweet taste, from the papaya, mango and mandarin oranges was really good, and then the heat comes on and gets you by surprise, but then subsides and leaves you with a warm feeling. It was something different that I would have never thought of getting for a dessert topping, but it will now be on my list of sauces to buy and keep on hand. Pick up or order a jar of Sugar Fire Dessert sauce and give your taste buds a treat. You’ll be glad you did.

The first time I tried Torchbearer’s Sugar Fire was at Jungle Jim’s last August. I remember tasting it on a chip or cracker and thinking it’s definitely not a sauce to try on crackers, but maybe on fruit… So when I received my Super Sugar Fire, I knew exactly what to try it on: fresh bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. At first, I tried a spoonful right out of the jar, and was surprised. The fruit flavors really stood out, and I could even pick up on the individual flavors of papaya and mango, which was unexpected. Yet the interesting flavor was overshadowed by the odd consistency. Super Sugar Fire seemed more like baby food than a sauce to me. I wasn’t sure if I should be eating it with a spoon, or pouring it over dessert. Since the texture wasn’t all that appealing, I decided one spoonful was enough, and moved onto the fruit.

I sliced up the banana and some strawberries, spread them on a plate with some blueberries, and then covered the fruit with Super Sugar Fire. Since my spoonful earlier hadn’t seemed too incredibly spicy, I poured the sauce on quite heavily, and then dove in. First things first: appearance. Super Sugar Fire is a very nice looking sauce. There is plenty to see with visible flecks of fruit and pepper and spices. It smells amazing: sweet and fruity, but not like any one single ingredient. Everything seems to come together quite nicely. The flavor is really great if you’re looking for something sweet, but the texture kept me off-balance. I couldn’t get past the baby food feeling. On the strawberries and blueberries, it just wasn’t quite right. The flavor worked well, but it wasn’t the right match texture-wise. Then I tried it on the banana, and knew I had found the perfect match. The consistency was perfect and the flavor was absolutely delicious. I moved the berries aside and devoured the banana.

After a few mouthfuls, the heat started to catch up with me. I’ll admit, the heat of the Super Sugar Fire built up and surprised me. It’s definitely the hottest dessert sauce I’ve had, no question there. The habaneros in the sauce don’t have too much kick up front, but each bite seems a little hotter than the last, and eventually you’ll notice it. This is definitely not a sauce for the average banana-eater, but an interesting dessert sauce for a chilehead.

Later, I tried Super Sugar Fire on vanilla ice cream, and loved it. I think the texture and consistency of the food is important with this sauce. I didn’t care for it on my berries, but the ice cream and bananas were a match made in heaven. I am thinking the right kind of cake would work well too. All in all, I really like the flavor and the heat of Super Sugar Fire, it just needs to be eaten on the right foods.

Torchbearer Sugar Fire and Super Sugar Fire Sauces

I decided to do these 2 reviews together because they taste exactly the same. The only difference is the heat, and there is a big difference. When I first tried this sauce it tasted really familiar, but I couldn’t figure out what I thought it tasted like. It’s obviously a sweet sauce which I’m not really big into but it was good though. I tried a few different recipes from the torchbearer cookbook including some brownies that turned out great, but the best use of it was not on desserts, but for breakfast.

The majority of both jars ended up being spread on toast, cinnamon bread or Eggo waffles in the mornings for breakfast. When I first tried this stuff it tasted really familiar but I couldn’t place it. The ingredients listed a couple of different types of fruit, but I cant really pick any of them out in the flavor. The consistency of it is good and feels kind of like applesauce. That is not what I was thinking it tasted like though, but it was close.

I thought about it for a couple days while trying different recipes and eventually it hit me. The Sugar Fire Sauce tastes like apple butter. I went to the store and bought some since it had been a while since I had it and I compared the ingredients and they weren’t even close, not a single one matched up. I opened it and spread some on a piece of toast and the consistency didn’t match up because the apple butter is thick, but when I tried it the flavor was really close. The Sugar fire is a little sweeter and don’t have any apples in it, just papaya, mango’s, and mandarin oranges. It lists all natural spices in it but does not say which ones. I would guess cinnamon is one of the spices in it but I could be wrong, it’s hard to really tell. The regular sugarfire I have to eat a lot of before I can detect the habanero heat but the xx hot version I can taste it right away and it builds fast. The thing I really like about the xx hot version is that the flavor is not effected by the extra heat, I expected it to have a little flavor of habanero but it don’t, its just as sweet and fruity as the original. all in all I probably wont buy these sauces again but I would recommend the xx hot version to anyone that wants a spicy desert sauce because I was impressed with the amount of heat in it without being able to detect peppers in the taste.

Pancakes with this sauce, sliced bananas and maybe a bit of cool whip would probably be good.

I’d almost bet that this would be good on a banana split from Dairy Queen as well.
